Bioenergy has been quietly providing renewable energy in Australia and around the world for decades but it has great potential to play a much greater role in Australia as a major stationary energy source.
The Bioenergy Roadmap has been created by Australia’s diverse bioenergy industry as a first step to ensuring that bioenergy, the ‘forgotten renewable’, becomes a significant contributor to Australia’s future stationary energy supply that can reduce the nation’s carbon pollution.
Bioenergy is electricity, fuel or thermal energy made from biomass – organic matter like landfill, sewerage or sugarcane/wood wastes.
While the USA and Europe already use bioenergy to generate substantial quantities of power, Australia’s abundant local fossil fuel reserves has left bioenergy’s potential energy supply largely unexplored.
Article continues below…With a rapid transition to a low carbon economy now essential, bioenergy technology can play a major role by providing energy security and clean power to Australian businesses and homes well into the future. In fact, the Clean Energy Council estimates that bioenergy could power over 1.2 million homes by 2020 and up to 8.5 million homes by 2050.
The Bioenergy Roadmap sets out a clear strategy to achieve:
* A growing, sustainable Australian bioenergy industry * Increased community awareness and acceptance of bioenergy * A consistent national policy to support the industry’s development * Long term investor certainty.
Bioenergy has the capacity to meet Australia’s growing energy needs and is ready for further growth. To be part of Australia’s energy future today, download your copy of The Bioenergy Roadmap at www.cleanenergycouncil.org.au/bioenergy
The Bioenergy Roadmap was developed in collaboration with a range of industry associations and stakeholders and with financial support provided by the Australian Government.
